Mario Bastian is a interdisciplinary artist difficult to frame in a single artistic discipline.Since 1992, and strongly linked to theatre, photography, experimental music, design, performance art and video art, he starts working for theatre and dance companies. As a professional, he has been working as a freelance multimedia designer since 1995. At the same time, He has developed a continuous path in artistic projects as live cinema pieces, interactive installations, sound and visual works for theater, performance and dance. He uses technology creating his own sound and visual instrument by means of platforms such as Isadora, MaxMSP-Jitter or Quartz Composer. In his sound pieces, audiovisual works, interactive installations and performances, he gives special significance to concept, as well as to the process of creation where hybridization and transdisciplinarity give rise to areas where philosophy, politics, science and art can coexist and be greatly influenced. More About

Queer Toys is a sound and performative project first created by Javier Iriso (Irísono), Antonio Caminero and Mario Bastian. Originally set as a group open to collaborations with other artists and based on improvisation with analogical toys, circuit bending, unconventional instruments and acoustic instruments.

Queer Toys escapes from software instruments within the creative process of experimental music and adds an ironic and humorous touch to improvisation, something unusual in experimental music.

Miguel A. García and Daniel Simon offer a severe diptych. Although both pieces are constructed similarly on superimposed layers struck here and there by incisive elements, they are quite distinct in character. The second, to become appears intense, grave, as do its sounds. Drift, which opens the diptych, is more brilliant; it's lighter. But its abrupt ending prepares us for what follows. The duration of both pieces, approximately five minutes each, invites the listener to listen repeatedly. In this sense, I specially recommend listening to drift for the second time right after to become, thus transforming the diptych into a triptych where to become is the central element. As you listen, drift reaches depths strengthened by to become that, in first instance (or at least that is what happened to the undersigned) had nearly passed unnoticed.

<a href="http://www.hybridart.net/label/m_a_garcia-daniel_simon/2012/05/16/drift-to_become_back.jpg" rel="lightbox[example]" title="MIguel A.
We don't need to think back to the London riots of August 2011 to find ourselves in a Ballardian context. Figures like the Spanish employment minister Fátima Báñez, the president of the Community of Madrid (Spain), Esperanza Aguirre or the magnificent Angela Merkel would have been characters that border on the implausible, and could have even been included in Ballard's dystopian visions. Thanks to the aggravation and extension of penal consequences in marches, the hardening of the Spanish penal code intends to slow down the likely escalade of civil insurrection provoked by the State's aggressive economic and social reforms, closing a context that, once again, leads us to the democratic agony and depletion of resources narrated by James G. Ballard. As regards discourse, for Ballard these resources are a search for bridges that will make certain metaphors explicit. Affirming that Miguel A. García and Daniel Simon's music in drift/to become could have been produced in the catacombs of Ballardian cities presided by cathedral-like shopping centres and immaculate airports, is all the more evident for certain readers who affirm that this music is without a doubt a product of a social context governed by people like Mariano Rajoy or Angela Merkel. But, in any case, that's the way it is. If you doubt it, I urge you to listen to drift/to become in your car, at night, as you travel with no clear destination down a bypass of any European city.

We do not know, nor de we need to know, the work process followed by Miguel A. García and Daniel Simon. We may suppose that beforehand they agreed, more or less explicitly, on certain guidelines. But whatever the case may be, drift/to become manifests the potentiality of the joint work of this duo. They're smart these two. They offer us ten fantastic minutes that leave us longing, ever so strongly, for more, much more.

Written by / Texto escrito por: Rubén Gutierrez.

MORE INFO AND DOWNLOADS / MÁS INFORMACIÓN Y DESCARGAS
